Legal Question in DUI Law in Florida

I had a DUI in Florida in 1981 while in the Navy. I pleaded no contest and posted bond. A court date was set 9 months later. I was being deployed and told the clerk I wouldn't be there for the court date. I was told that if I didn't appear the bond would be forfeited and that would be that. Now I find 29 years later Florida has listed me on a "National Registry". and I must clear something up before I can renew my license. I have a copy of the case disposition and it has line items listed of events concerning the case. Of the items there is a capias ordered, bond forfeited, and capias recalled. How should I proceed?

If you go at it without an attorney make sure all the terms of your probation are done. Fines and costs paid and any treatment completed. You might need to order this from the probation department to make sure it is all done.

If you hire an attorney they will do most of this for you. This will probably be closed out as long you completed everything. This is a 30 years old misdemeanor not exactly the crime of the century. I recommend calling around to some local attorneys in the county the charges are from and see what they would charge to help you out. This will quickly lower your stress and resolve it much faster. In the past when this situation has occurred the judge usually withdraws the capias and will terminate the probation as long as you have paid the costs. Big picture, you go on with your life.
