if 2 people who are not married buy a home together and then years later one of them goes into a nursing home and applies for medicaid, what happens to the home? Does medicaid take the home? Does the other partner not in the nursing home lose the home too?

Did you purchase the home as tenants in common or as to rights of survivorship. That will make a huge difference.
