My mother is currently in a skilled nursing/short term rehab facility. Because she has met her goals of physical and occupational therapy, they wish to release her right away. However, she still has a stage 3 bed sore. There are very few facilities that will accept a client with a stage 3 bed sore, even if it is healing - we have checked. She still has 80 days before her insurance runs out. I believe that they want her to leave because she's recently been diagnosed with dementia and has become a high maintenance patient. Moving her two more times would be very hard on her.. . .and pointless, if the job of the facility is to heal wounds. Can they legally put her out? Do we have the right to demand the wound be healed before departing?

Being recently diagnosed with Dementia is not really an issue unless her physician has stated that it is rapidly increasing or can be controlled with meds. The issue as to the bed sore - I suggest you take her to a hospital. The rehab is for physical therapy - not sure they can handle bed sores. Check her coverage and speak to the person in charge at the rehab. Then contact her physician and see what he advises. Take that information into account before you do anything.
