paying for assisted living
Is there a law protecting my mother's home - or do I need to sell it to pay for the assisted living facility.

You should consult with an elder law attorney to discuss your options. There are too many factors to consider in order to make an informed decision.
Re: paying for assisted living
It depends on what your Mother's total economic picture is, and what her goals are. If she becomes eligible for Medicaid to pay for her ALF expenses she will technically be able to keep her house, but you will still have to plan for how the house expenses will be paid. The key is to consult with an Elder Law attorney to formulate a comprhensive plan. Do not transfer or sell any of your Mother's assets without first consulting with an Elder Law attorney.
