If a person has dementia and signs power of attorney papers to someone who has taken over her life in every way. Ie: controls her finances, placing her in a nursing home, getting rid of all her personal belongings. without the family being informed.. Is the power of attorney papers legal?

no -- but you must prove that he was not competent when he signed the POA. That is a tough burden.
