Legal Question in Entertainment Law in Florida

Copyright concerns over a book with Disney's name

I am an employee of The Walt Disney World Company and have been for about ten years. I have seen several guide books pertaining to Disney World and I think they all are missing something. I want to write an 'insider's' guide to Disney World, but do not know the lega concerns. I know it must be possible, because I see so many, but I don't want to break any rules or laws. What should I know to proceed?

Re: Copyright concerns over a book with Disney's name

Have you considered approaching the executives at Disney World about sponsoring such an undertaking? Perhaps you could make a deal with them to write the book and share the profits. That would be simpler, not only legally, but also in actually getting the book published.

On the other hand, in general, any writer is permitted to comment on and critique a tourist attraction such as Disney World. That, in and of itself, is not a problem. Problems arise when you disclose proprietary information you have access to, or when you use a Disney trademark.

First you should write your book in a raw format. It is best to come up with compelling text and content before you start thinking about the legal concerns. You can then take the book to an entertainment attorney for a review. Believe me the publishing company attorneys will and they will reject the content if it violates others rights.
