Copyright Your Melody?
Hey, I just got the opportunity to do a song with a producer who is famous and I was told by my former piano coach to copyright my melody but, I don't know how to can anyone tell me how to do this? Is it done the same time when I copyright my lyrics?

Congratulations on the opportunity!
Please see http://www.copyright.gov
I recommend the FAQ section.
Your works are protected/protectable when they are fixed in a tangible medium - the melody when audio recorded or written in sheet music; the lyrics when when they are written down on paper, computer, or other medium.
It is not necessary to register your works with the copyright office for them to be protectable. However, there are advantages to registering, including the ability to sue for copyright infringement.
After you read the FAQ, if you still have questions, feel free to email me.
On a related note, when the famous producer presents you with a contract, PLEASE read it carefully before signing (insist that you are given time to take the contract with you for review), and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you have an attorney review the contract before signing.
Best of luck!
