Legal Question in Family Law in Florida

5 years ago I began dating a woman who had a 1 year old son. He is now 6, my relationship with the mother is dissolving. She is Bipolar was on medication and has decided to stop taking the medication. She has become violent with me and has now gotten together with another man that has criminal record. Although, unemployed her plan is now to move in with a 23 year old man she met 2 months ago and that is also unemployed. The child has been raised calling me Dad and the biological father lives in CO and does not attempt to see the child. The child and I feel a huge emotional bond I have raised him as my own. As I mentioned she had been taking medication for the Bipolar but now has stopped taking it. Her behavior has become increasingly erratic as time has gone on and she refuses to seek help. I believe at this point she may be a danger to the child. I would like to get some sort of guardianship rights to to make sure I can stay in contact with the child. We are in FL.

Sadly this is not your child. There are several possible plans you could follow but you would need the consent of the father. I suggest the two of you get together and speak with an attorney on those issues.
