Legal Question in Family Law in Florida

Adoption

I served in the Marines for 11 years and recently got out leaving me temporarily unemployed and leavingmy son uninsured. My son is 12 years old born out of wed-lock and has lived with his mother's parents his entire life. My son's mother has been estranged all 12 years every once in a while she will visit and then dissapear again.

His grandparents never asked anything from me, I've never had a court judgement to pay child support but now because of him not having medical insurance and having an expensive hospital bill they applied for Medicare and in turn had to go to Child Support Enforcement.

I do have an account with my sons name where I have been making monthly deposits for him and have been active in his life. I do not want the state telling me I have to pay X amount to his grandparents. They are well off and never asked me for a dime I am struggling to make ends meet. Can I give my custodial rights up and have his grandparents adopt him? Any other advice...

P.S When grandparents went to child support enforcement they gave CSE all my info but no info of their daughter, bo address no SSN, nothing....

Your thoughts?

Re: Adoption

If the grandparents, the mother, and the court agree, you can give up your parental rights and have them adopt the child. You could also take the child back from them, though whether this is in the best interest of your child, I can't say.

You should speak with a family lawyer.
