Step-parent adoptions are a fairly easy procedure for most family lawyers. You probably shouldn't attempt it on your own. If your ex will consent (which will end his child support), everything should be smooth. If your ex will not consent, you'll have to try and terminate his rights, which can be complex, and you should certainly use a lawyer before attempting to terminate rights.
