What are the consequences if I stop paying alimony because I can't afford it?

Re: Alimony
You need to seek a downward modification from the court.
Re: Alimony
For a start, they can suspend your driver's license, registration, and go after your tax refund. If the Court finds you in contempt, the judge can also send your hindquarters to jail.
Pursue a Supplemental Petition for Downward Modification of Alimony. Since alimony was last addressed by the Courts, assuming that there has since been a substantial change in circumstances that would justify a downward modification, then that maybe the way to go.

An internet inquiry is no substitution for an in-office consultation with an attorney.
If your situation falls within the Greater Tampa Bay area, I would be happy to schedule you for a no obligation half hour office consultation. The main office is in Largo, with a satellite location in Tampa.

If you do not agree, then stop right here, and do not read any further.
If you simply stop paying, you can be held in contempt of court for failing to comply with a court order. As a result, you can have your driver's license suspended and eventually be placed in jail if the court so orders.
What you should do, is file a Motion for A Downward Modification of Alimony. You have to allege the circumstances which have changed which warrant the need to reduce your alimony. In order to increase your potential for success, you should retain an attorney to represent you in this matter.
