There are provisions for several types of alimony. Whether a spouse gets an award and what kind depends on many factors. Some factors are the ability of the paying spouse to pay, whether there are young children at home, the level of education of the receiving spouse, the length of the marriage, the need to learn a trade in order to become self-supporting, that sort of thing.
