Legal Question in Family Law in Florida
Back Child Support/$30,000
I was paying child support through the state of Florida on a regular basis through a payroll deduction. When I bought my own business I paid directly to my ex-wife and not though the state. I paid with personal checks and money orders. Florida has suspended my drivers license for non-payment of $30K in child support. I have been told that since I did not pay through the state the money given to her is considered a 'gift'. Also, the divorce papers state that my child support was to end when the kids turned 18. When they turned 18 I stopped paying child support. Was I supposed to go to court to legally stop paying? Any advice you can offer is appreciated.

Re: Back Child Support/$30,000
Hopefully you will be able to to prove you made your support payments. If so, you should be able to get your license reinstated. Also, you should have gone to court to get an order stopping your child support payments.
