Legal Question in Family Law in Florida

Changing last name

I am 26 yrs old. I would like to take my grandfather's last name. Would it be easier or more cost efficient for him to adopt me or simply to change my name?

Re: Changing last name

Changing your name is a fast and relatively simple procedure. An adoption is far more costly and takes much more work. Many courts will not even allow an adoption of an adult by anyone other than a stepparent.

You can find all of the Supreme Court approved adoption forms with instructions for completion at:

http://www.flcourts.org/osca/divisions/family/bin/index.html

See Form 12.981(c)(1) as a guide.

Good Luck.

Re: Changing last name

Not quite sure why you want to be adopted at 26 but it would be easier to apply to the court for a name change if you fir the criteria. Please feel free to contact my office if you need assistance with the forms and procedure.

Re: Changing last name

If you want his name then change yours. If you want him to adopt you, then you and he need to discuss that and proceed in that manner.
