Legal Question in Family Law in Florida

child custody

i have 1 child w/ a man i was never married to and he has become abusive. we have never filed papers w/ the courts. he is trying to keep our son from me unless i sign papers that take away my natural rights. he lives in a dif. state and my att. told me to go get him NOW! when i get back to my home, what do i need to do to protect me and my rights? how long does my son have to reside in FL before i can file for help? what do i do if he threatens my life again?

Re: child custody

Your attorney was right. Go get your son. In Florida, an unmarried father has no rights until a court grants him rights.

However, the state where your ex-boyfriend lives may give him rights, so you may need a Florida lawyer and a lawyer in the other state to help you.

If your boyfriend threatens you, you should report him to the police and file a domestic violence injunction against him.
