How does Child Support figure in for people with Joint custody of the child?

Child support is usually paid to the custodial parent by the non custodial parent pursuant to the establish guidelines. The guidelines can be found online at:

Minimal deviation is allowed but usually no more than 5% unless the children actually spend a substantial time in both homes.

Child support is determined by considerations of relative income primarily and secondarily relative assets of the parents, together with a predicate that children are entitled to live in the lifestyle of the parents. Joint custody involves the rights of parents to make decisions for their children, and joint physical custody affects living arrangements. Of course, with joint physical custody, both parents will have to maintain some sort of space for the child or children, and that will impact the relative need of each parent to spend to maintain a household for the well-being of their children.
