Legal Question in Family Law in Florida
Hello. I was divorced nine years ago and ordered to pay $5000/month permanent alimony to my wife. However, my ex-wife and I have just gone through a modification of our own volition, in which I am paying her $250,000 as a lump sum in order to be done with everything. Forever. The hearing before the judge will not be for another couple of weeks, at which time it will all be over. But I do wonder in the meantime if this money is tax deductible for me, the way the alimony payments have been. She was to report her alimony and I when I asked my divorce attorney if she'll also have to report the $250K, he wasn't certain. He asked an accountant who actually worked on my case nine years ago (when we were going through the divorce), and he also wasn't sure. Would anybody happen to know? Thanks in advance.

I think you need to find a more qualified accountant to discuss the tax implications of alimony payments, however, with that being said, this may be useful to you: http://www.wwwebtax.com/adjustments/alimony.htm
