Ex-fiance owes me money

I was engaged and during the engagement I helped him getting his life straight and loaned money to him which he doesn't want to pay back. He stated to take him to small claims court but it was for $11,500.00 I have been told that it is not small claims.

You can proceed pro se in County Court up to $15,000. You will need independent proof of the loan. Goodluck.
