Legal Question in Family Law in Florida

How to file for divorce

My husband and I want to get a divorce and I think we can agree on almost everything. How do we begin? I can't afford a lawyer, but I don't have low enough income for free help either. Please don't ask me to call the Clerk's Office - they won't give me any advice.

Thank you.

Filing for divorce when the parties agree with everything may not be as expensive as you may think. The rate would depend on the Agreement itself. For example if there will be language referring to children and support etc., property, cars. My rate begins at $700.00 and goes up from there depending on the Agreement. If you still can't afford this and you reside in Broward County then you can go to the second floor of the Broward County Courthouse and purchase a package. Just be careful with this. You don't want to have it bite you later if prepared incorrectly. Sincerely, Melody Stickel-Martinez, Esq. (954)764-4484

The information you can obtain varies by county. For example, here in Lee County there is a Family Court Services office in the Courthouse that offers classes for a nominal fee. If a similar program is not available in your county then you could visit your local law library to obtain information. However, I agree with attorney Stickel-Martinez that many times persons regret not spending the money to retain an attorney.
