Legal Question in Family Law in Florida

I was fired on May 2, 2009 and unable to pay child support to my ex husband. I have filed a Modification of child support and I am awaiting a hearing date. Is there another way I could have handled this? What does abatement mean in terms of child support?

Technically, when you lose your job, you are supposed to file a motion to abate support. Abate means "stop," either temporarily or permanently. But your motion to modify should work. If you want, you can file an amended motion, changing it to a motion to abate, asking that child support, or, at least, child support payments, stop until you get a job.
