Why is a general magistrate asked to get involved in a family law hearing

A magistrate is like an assistant judge. They get involved in cases usually because the parties request it (it may speed up the case), the judge orders it (to speed up his or her docket), or the rules of the county require it. It's especially common to use magisrates where the case only involves child support or modifying something after a divorce is already final.
