Guardianship of Minor Child

My niece (now residing in Louisiana) is coming to live with me temporarily (2 years) in Florida. Her mother consents; the identity of her father is unknown. Do I need to file a Petition for Temporary Custody of Minor Child in order to enroll the child in school and do other things related to her care?

The written and witnessed consent of the mother should be enough. Tell her to see an attorney about drafting such temporary custody document and about explaining the consequences to her.
