Second husband adopting my child

I have a child from a previous husband. We are now divorced. The child has my maiden name, not my ex-husband's last name. I have since remarried, and my new husband wants to adopt my child. Does the child's father have to know about this, and what procedure do we go through? I am receiving child support, and don't wish to give that up. Does the father have to sign any papers?

You will need his consent. A court procedure is necessary.
