can a husband drop his wifes health insurance that he provides through his employer when they separate?

Yes. If you quickly file the divorce, though, in many counties an order is automatically entered which prevents him from dropping health insurance on you. You may want to check with a lawyer in your county or the clerk's oofice to see if your county does this.
