if you go to jail how can you turn over custody of your child to a family member

As long as the other parent doesn't object, you just do. (Understand that the other parent's custodial rights will supersede yours in most circumstances while you're in jail.) If you are turning the child over to another person, it's always a good idea to get a power of attorney to allow that person to take the child in for nonemergency medical procedures and register the child for school.
