Legal Question in Family Law in Florida

Am I legally related to my stepfather?

My mother remarried when I was young. My stepfather never adopted me. Now I am an adult, my mother died and my stepfather has remarried. Is there any legal relationship between me and my stepfather? If he were to fall ill, would I have any rights?

Thank you, Jay

No. If your stepfather did not adopt you, then you do not have any legal relationship to him. Of course, he is free to leave you anything he likes under his Will but you do not have any automatic rights to his estate. If he should die intestate, you would not inherit anything.

Re: Am I legally related to my stepfather?

Nope, sorry!

If you got along well, he just might leave you something in his will.
