Legal Question in Family Law in Florida

I live in Florida. I recently got engaged, and my ex offered to surrender his rights to our daughter. He has never even met her and my fiance is all she knows as her Daddy. We would like to do this, but do not plan on getting married until we achieve our degrees in about 18 months. We are both full time students that maintain our life strictly on Financial aid and Student Loans. Where do I start, and is this a process I can begin now?

In order for a parent to voluntarily relinquish their parental rights they must file a Petition for Termination of Parental Rights. A hearing must be held to determine whether their request is done voluntarily and that they understand the process that they are requesting from the court. In order to do step parent adoption you and your fiance must already be married. You can obtain the forms for this for free at flcourts.org.
