Legal Question in Family Law in Florida
I have lived with a man for 19 years and he is abusing me emotionally by screaming at me and breaking my possessions. I want to move out but afraid that he'll wreck what little amounts I own. I don't want anything from him, just to get out in one piece. Since I have no family or friends here, I will have to move myself. It will take me about a week to carry things out since I am 63 and not very strong. I would hire someone but he has a vicious rottweiler who will attack anyone who comes into the house or yard. Also, he has started to drink again. Question: can I use the sheriff's office as a threat if he wrecks my things?

Based on the facts stated in your inquiry, you may be best served if you now contact the local Sheriff's office, discuss the matter with the Domestic Violence or similar unit, consider requesting a restraining order for the local court to cover the period of your relocation, and plan your relocation. My advice is to take these actions prior to moving if you believe that he will not cooperate and behave reasonably. Local family courts have special divisions for domestic violence because it is a prevalent and continuing issue in our communities.
