Marriage and bad credit

I am about to marry, my credit history is great, but his is not. He filed bankrupcy approx 5 yrs ago. Question if we marry will his bad credit affect mine.Is there anything I can do for protections. Also I own property, he does not. What can I do to protect my access.

Debt acquired prior to marriage is not marital debt. However, you never know whether mistakes will show up with credit companies. Pay close attention to your credit reports.

As for property, it is the same as debt: if it was acquired prior to the marriage, it is individual property. However, things could occur during the marriage that changes it into marital property or there may be some questions by the time you get to a dissolution action. To prevent potential disagreements, you can have a premarital agreement drafted stating that what you go into the marriage with remains yours only.
