marriage and money

I an interested in knowing once you get married and there is no pre nup--is everything I have split down the middle if divorce or how does that work. I do not like prenups, but I have a substancially more $ than my husband to be. Thank you

Yes. If you have children, you should have a pre nup.

Not everything is necessarily split down the middle. Only what is considered "marital asset," what has been accumulated or enhanced during the marriage, is normally distributed equally (with some exceptions, of course). If the pre-marital assets are comingled with the marital assets, for instance, it might be difficult to leave your individual portion out of the property being distributed equally at the time of dissolution. A pre-marital agreement would not hurt, if you think you can approach the subject with your future spouse.
