If someone gets her divorce in California going back to Family Court for a name change is easy and requires one form. (Check to see whether this is true in Florida as well. If so, do it there.) Otherwise anyone can get a name change in California by filing a few forms, paying a filing fee, and having an announcement published in the Legal Notices section of a local newspaper. Get a "how-to" book from the library and do it yourself, or contact an experienced Family Law attorney in the county where you live for specific advice and possible representation on your behalf.

you can quite simply do it yourself thru your local courthouse. just fill out the name change form, or you could have an attorney help you prepare the paperwork and file it.
