Parents divorcing and selling a home

My mother aqquired credit cards and student loans while my father was on military leave. He never knew of any of it until he came home and the debt collects where calling. They managed to pay off the debt by refinacing on their home. Now they are going through a divorce. My father feels he should not have to slipt the earnings of the house equally due to her debt prior. Is this leagally allowed or not.
