Legal Question in Family Law in Florida

Paternity

After dating a girl briefly, having consensual sex which I was told was protected by the pill and then breaking up 3 months later- she calls me months later and says she is pregnant and wants to keep it but I don' t need to help her in any way. I expressed not wanting to have a child and that I would pay for an abortion but what rights do I have against her coming back later and deciding I have to pay? I have emails stating that she wants nothing from me but am I at all protected when she said she was on the pill and then says later on she got pregnant anyway?

Re: Paternity

Here's how it works, regardless of whether the two of you broke up, whether she was on the pill, whether she lied about birth control, whether you want the child, or whether she said you don't have to have anything to do with the child:

You are responsible for child support if she has custody. She can enforce that requirement by either bringing a child support action against you through the Department of Revenue or by bringing a private paternity action against you.

You are entitled to visitation and a shot at custody. You'll have to bring a paternity case against her once the child is born in order to achieve either.

Your best bet at this point is to speak to a good family lawyer to have your rights explained in more detail.
