Legal Question in Family Law in Florida

I have been paying my child's mother child support by check for the past 10 years (at her request). She recently applied for state assistance and lied saying that I do not pay. I have now been served paperwork for a non-jury trial for the petition for modification (for the first 7 years my child support went through the state). I have already sent a response once I got served and provided copies of cashed checks. Are checks considered child support payment, and do I need to go to the hearing since I live out of state. My son will be over 18 when this hearing is set. thanks
