Legal Question in Family Law in Florida

promissory of marriage

I found a paper in my boyfriends closet that said marriage of religion on the top. it is writtrn in french. it has his name, his parents name, his son's mom's name and her parents. this was written by the a clerk in haiti and witnessed by a minister. The date on it was Feb. 18, 2003. i could not read most of it because it was in french. it had the sel of haiti on it also. When I confronted him he said it was a promissory of marriage he never went thru on. He also read some of it to me saying thery were supposed to be presented to the church for marriage on Feb. 18,2007 and that they were not married.

My question is, does this type of thing exist? Is is legally binding? Is this truly a marriage record? Does this mean he's married

NOTE: This communication is not intended as and should not be interpreted as legal advice. Rather, it is intended solely as a general discussion of legal principles. You should not rely on or take action based on this communication without first presenting ALL relevant details to a competent attorney in your jurisdiction and then receiving the attorney's individualized advice for you. By reading the "Response" to your question or comment, you agree that the opinion expressed is not intended to, nor does it, create any attorney-client relationship, nor does it constitute legal advice to any person reviewing such information, nor will it be considered an attorney-client privileged communication. If you do not agree, then stop right here, and do not read any further.

Without knowing the full context of the paper, it would be impossible to give any answer to your question. You live in Miami-Dade County and there are many places to get an instrument translated. There are also attorneys who are familiar with Haitian customs and laws. Meet with one who can give you some solid advice.

Re: promissory of marriage

I would want to have the full and correct translation before I ventured into an answer.

Maybe you could go to the Haitian Embassy/Consulate, take a copy with you and see what they say there.
