Legal Question in Family Law in Florida

Son is missing?
My boyfriend has an ex wife with a drug and alcohol problems. She still has custody of the son because despite her issues he is treated fairly well. The full time custody has been off and on between the two of them. She was caught with her 3rd DUI and this time will go to jail. She is not working either and had a court date next month to determine how long up to a year she will go to jail. She went on a trip to out of state and the son went with her. I didn't think much of it until my boyfriend told me their phones are both disconnected and he doesn't know when they are returning. We both admitted we are worried she took the son because if the court sentences her to jail she will lose custody of the 16 yr old son possibly for good. My question is how long should my boyfriend wait to contact authorities? And at what point based on little information we have will authorities see a need to send out a search?
