How much time should a lawyer spend on an ongoing case. ..and can they charge me more than we agreed if they don't have to do a lot of work

The question of whether or not an attorney can charge more than you agreed will be dependent on the specific language of your retainer agreement with the attorney. As to how much time an attorney will spend on an ongoing case, that will be determined by what tasks the attorney is completing, such as filing Motions, complying with discovery requests, attending hearings, etc.
