Legal Question in Family Law in Florida

I am wanting to get custody of my son. My ex-girlfriend can not afford to take care of him properly. She has two other children by someone else and has all 3 boys living in the same room in one of the worst neighborhoods in her city. She barely has money to get by. She is on all government assistance (including WIC,foodstamps, housing, and even gets daycare paid for.)She doesn't have a job. She is a fulltime student. I own my home and live with my wife and daughter, I am in the military and have a stable income, and my wife stays at home with our daughter. My concern is that she lives in North Carolina and we live in Florida. Time-sharing is difficult due to me being the only one who can afford to drive back and forth. Is there a way that I can get majority of the time with my son or can the courts have her move to Florida so we can have equal time-sharing?

You would need to bring a proceeding in NC to determine custody. Good luck.
