Legal Question in Family Law in Florida

I am wanting to get sole custody of my son. He already lives with me and has since birth. He is now almost 3. I left his father when my son was 4 months old because of physical abuse. The father only see's him when it is convenient for him which is only a couple times a month if that. The father doesn't pay me child support or help with my son at all. He lives a very wild life and lives in a very bad area and I don't want my son around him when he is living the life that he is. I don't want my son to not ever see his father but I'd like it to be on my terms. I am in school to become a police officer and I can't have contact with people like him being a police officer and I really don't want my son in the type of environment. If I could get help with this situation and any advice I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi. You should first realize that even if you get sole custody, the father would still have rights to see his son. You could ask for supervised visits, if you have concern for your son's safety when he is with his father.

To start the process, you would file a petition with the court.
