In a civil suit must I respond to a suphoena in another state?

Assuming you are not a party to the litigation, not if it is state court and possibly not if it is a federal court. But you should know what you're doing if you're getting subpoenaed.

Usually , a subpoena has no authority out of state.

almost always -- a subpoena issued out of state and not confirmed or reissued by your state has no effect. you can't generally be compelled to go from one state to another. there are exceptions, but they are very very few.
