contractors' refusal to pay flooring fees

i completed aflooring job inexcess of $1500.00.now the contractor says he does'nt have the money to pay me. What are my options to collect fromm this man?School starts tomorrow, and I have five children. I'm desperate for this money.

From your post it doesn't sound like you would qualify to file a lien as a subcontractor. However, you can always sue the contractor in small claims court. If you have a written contract there may be a provision for attorney's fees which will allow you to get reimbursed should you hire an attorney. Even without a contract, you may be able to recover your attorney's fees if you win.

However, before you sue him you should exhaust non-legal actions such as working out a payment plan with him. (this will be faster) $1500 is probably not much to the GC, but I understand it could be a substantial amount for you.
