gas line ran illegally

We bought a piece of property that had a unmarked gas line on it. It was not permitted or recorded. It runs thru middle of land. We accidentally ruptured the line. While doing maintenance the city requested us to do. The city now claims we are responsible for all repairs, fines, overtime pay etc. Even though the gas line is illegal and tresspassing on our property. Please advice.

If these facts are correct, you can sue the company that owns the pipe for trespass/inverse condemnation. Get a real estate attorney involved ASAP; they'll want a winner like this probably is.
