joint account

i had a joint checking account with my ex-boyfriend. when we broke up i ask him to go to the bank with me in order to take him off from the account. he always found an excuse not to go and i couldnt close the account without him being present. a few months after we broke up he went on a shopping spree with my money. i have proof that we had broken up and the only money going into the account were my deposits from my payroll. is there anyway i can recuperate my money.
