Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Florida
Legal Name?
I was born Willia$. As a child I was first Bil$y then Bil$. When I joined the Air Force I put Bil$ on my enlistment paperwork. No one ever questioned this. I have been Bil$ ever since. I was discharged as Bil$. I have been married 3 times as Bil$. I have purchased 3 houses as Bil$, and all my credit history is as Bil$. Any dealings I have had with the law has been as Bil$ and all background checks ever done on me have been done with the name Bil$. My passport says my name is Bil$ as does my Social Security Card.
Today when I went to apply for a marriage license (yep...that's #4) the Clerk of Court questioned it and insisted that I use the name Willia$ even though I produced ample documents (including passport) with the name Bil$. I argued this and eventually stated that I was mistaken about what my birth certificate said (let them do the research if they think it is important). What is important is that my marriage paperwork MUST jive perfectly with my USCIS/DHS paperwork for my fiancee's visa.
I am now 46 years old. Who am I now Bil$ or Willia$?
