Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Florida
so, if i have named a defendant to be my witness as petitioner, do i need to supeana them to appear at trial or is it mandatory for them to appear at trial.

If they are a named defendant, they are required to attend the trial. BTW: Did you list them on your witness list?

I must disagree with my fellow lawyer. The tactic many lawyers use is not have the defendant appear at trial. You have to prove your case. Therefore, if the defendant is necessary to prove your case, you better subpoena him.
