Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Florida

i a a resident in broward county florida and am the sole proprietor of a company with a fictious name status. i have 0 employees and my office is located in my home (ofcourse with the city and county tax receipt) i am involved with a civil legal matter and was told that as the "owner operator" of this home based business --it is NOT REQUIRED tha i have legal counsel. i know certainly it is advisable but i need to know if i legally am required.
