Responsability for car repair

My niece was hit by a van while on her bicycle leaving school. The person that hit the child wants the parents to pay for the damage to the vehicle. Are they liable for the damage?

You did not say where this crash occurred. If it happened in Florida I would encourage the parents to contact a personal injury attorney ASAP. In my experience when the "bad guy" becomes aggresive it is usually because they do not have insurance.
