Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Florida

Sued by my lawyer?

Years ago I got into trouble with the law and as a favor a lawyer friend of mine agreed to represent me at no charge. There was no agreement signed between me and the lawyer. I did pay all court and filing fees. I sent the lawyer a card thanking her for her help and promising that at some time in the future I would repay her favor. The lawyer is coming back to me now, years later, demanding payment for her services and threatening suit. Would she be able to win this case if she filed suit? She claims the card was a promise to actually pay her money in the future.

Re: Sued by my lawyer?

I beg to differ - I'm not certain it's as clear cut as the previous poster apparently believes it to be, with all due respect. If the facts are as you say, that you agreed to repay the favor, you then did not agree to pay her fees, but to do something very nice for her - a favor. It may very turn on the exact wording of your thank-you note.

Good luck.
