suing for payment

i recieved a summons for a lawsuit filed against me for unpaid medical bills. I wrote the law firm representing the hospital and told them i would send them 20.00 per month to settle the debt, the law firm sent me a letter stating their client rejected my offer and that i would have to make a more substancial offer when i wrote back and told them i dont know what a more substancial offer was and if they could tell me, i recieved no answer and the lawsuit papers arrived. now i have to go to court and the summons says they can take money from my paycheck any property or assets, which i have none of and they said there are other legal requirements and i need to get a lawyer right away. can they do this? can they reject a good faith offer as the amount i offered is really all i can afford at this time. any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. thank you

Yes, they can. They can get a judgment against you, so don't ignore the legal paperwork. Contact the hospital directly to try to work out a payment plan. The lawyers might have failed to advise the hospital of your desire to settle.
