I am receiving an award from a tobacco lawsuit in which my mother passed away from tobacco use. There are attorney fees and costs. The amount I receive, do I have to pay income taxes on?

Yes, for the amount that you actually receive, not for the attorneys' fees and costs that are kept by the attorneys. That rule was changed a few years ago.
